Animal Abuse ? – Ringling Bros. Elephant Video

PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, released a video last week showing what it says is the abuse of circus elephants by Ringling Bros.  Earlier this year, PETA had someone affiliated with their group film the above clip during a tour.

Used widely in elephant training, bullhooks are tools that have 4 to 8 pound handles with pointed metal hooks.  They are used to hit the elephant across the head, legs and body.  You will see that in one section of the video, a trainer swears at an elephant then strikes it with a bullhook while telling it to back up.

In a statement, Feld Entertainment Inc., which owns Ringling, called the PETA video “questionable in its context regarding the portrayal of circus animal handlers” and said the circus was in compliance with federal, state and local regulations at the time PETA says the video was made.  “Ringling Bros. is proud of its efforts to care for and increase the population of the endangered Asian elephant and we encourage people to come see for themselves that the animals are thriving in our care,” the company said.

Below are comments from an anonymous source in reply to the video:

Bravo for PETA. They targeted the ONLY family in the circus world who are known for being rough with their animals (and I know this, as I am a circus performer as well and have worked with hundreds of elephant animal trainers). Anyone in the circus community who sees these videos know that the abusers are all from the same family. PETA is giving off the impression that all animals on all circuses are being abused. This is simply not the case whatsoever.

And with regards to the whipping incident that occurs in this film, please, grow a brain. This is no different than how horses are trained and broken for competitions. Stop primarily going after the circuses and start going after every animal training institution.

Animal abuse in the circus world is similar to that of child abuse in America. Yes, it happens. It’s an unfortunate event, but it does occur. Yes, there are unfortunate idiots who hurt their animals without just cause. This is one of the only families who acts in this way. Go to any other circus and I can guarantee that 99% of the time, these actions will not be seen. When these actions are noticed by owners, the animal trainers usually lose jobs and gain a bad reputation in the circus world.

What do you think?  Can the elephants feel the bullhook through their tough hides? Or is this an attempt at training through fear?  I personally feel that PETA can be a bit sensational at times, but have they hit the nail on the head with this one?

Ms. California’s Carrie Prejean might be easy on the eyes but she’s sure hard on the ears….

Biblically correct Carrie Prejean hurts people every time she opens her mouth — and the noises she made into a mic at a horserace in Del Mar made that painfully apparent.

Talk about sticking your proverbial foot in your mouth!  Law enforcement sources say Dr. Murray himself told LAPD detectives about a closet where he kept medications hidden in Jackson’s home when he was interviewed the Saturday after Jackson’s death.

This all comes after Dr. Murray refused to answer the question if he had ever administered the drug Propofol, a powerful anesthesia, that is being blamed for the King of Pop’s death.

Law enforcement sources said when the LAPD first searched Jackson’s homethe night he died, they did not find Propofol or any other of the many other drugs that were supposed to be in Jackson’s house.

Dr. Murray talked to the LAPD the following Saturday and the information he supplied triggered another, broader search warrant. Cops returned to the house the following Monday and discovered “various drugs” secretly stashed in a closet of the guest room where Dr. Murray was staying.

One law enforcement source says: “The drugs were concealed…they weren’t obvious.” Among the stash — Propofol, the drug authorities believe killed Michael Jackson.

Is this Doc just stupid or maybe he using some of his own drugs?

Duschtard, Jon Gosseling has now been reported to be trying to land his own reality TV show.  In preparation for his attempt at a solo career is why, supposedly the chubby dad of 8, has been chillaxn with Michael Lohan and his entourage of younger skanks women…

Jon holds fast to his claims that his main concern is his children, but he is focusing on his private and his professional life.

Translation from the Jon Gosselin Dictionary: Jon knows he has to say his main concern is the children or he will look like an even bigger asshole than he already does…  But his main focus is trying to establish himself as a “Stud for Hire” but so far has only been able to land skanky drug addicts….  He has also realized he ain’t gonna get as much money from his divorce as he once thought, so he better get busyrubbing noses, or any other part that he can, with some influential people and drop the drug addicted skanks that he has been porking up to this point!

He is looking into some major international endorsement deals and it looks like he is going to have his own show.” He still has 30 Jon & Kate Plus 8 episodes left on the 40-episode order TLC placed, and the network has no comment on Jon’s new reality-show scheming.

The Octomom’s plot becomes apparent, as rumors of her new “Reality TV Show” were confirmed last month.   Now that the details are being ironed out, The Octopussy, I’m sure is a little disappointed in her salary…  The Groovy Gosselins are reported to make $70,000. per episode.  Octowomb and her brood, on the other hand, will only be making $250. a day each, for a whopping $250,000. for 3 years…   Of course that is for only 71 days of shooting.

TLC, who will make pertnear anything into a Reality TV Show,  apparently didn’t think that the Octomom and the childlin would make good TV, seeing that The Octofamily’s show is being produced by a British production company…

Here is what E! News had to say about the situation…

Who says it’s hard to find a job in California?

No word on what sort of fringe benefits are included, but Nadya Suleman‘s 14 children are each going to be earning $250 a day—for a total of about $250,000 altogether for three years—for starring in the reality show their mom has agreed to do for a British production company.

That’s $125,000 collectively for 36 days of shooting the first year; $75,000 for 21 days in the second year; and $50,000 for 14 days the third year. The octuplets and their six brothers and sisters will be paid the same rate for any extra days spent on camera.

According to the contract filing, 15 percent of the kids’ earnings will be placed in a trust account, as required by California law, that none of them will be able to get at until he or she is 18 or legally emancipated.

Considering all those burgeoning stars are only between the ages of 7 months and 7 years old, a judge will have to sign off on the contract filed today by Eyeworks UK in Los Angeles Superior Court before production can begin.

We’ll assume that the producers either have already, or are in the process of, acquiring all the proper permits for such an endeavor.

The as-yet untitled series, due to start shooting Sept. 1, has been shopped as less of a day-to-day intrusion look at the family’s life and more of a documentary-style show focusing on milestones in the children’s lives.

The thought of this show makes my skin crawl….  I’m sure I’ll watch it though, unless there is  a good documentary on watching grass grow or maybe watching paint dry.
