The Doughnut Police

“Cops & Doughnuts” is more than a punchline. It’s now a bakery in Clare, Michigan.  It is owned by nine full-time employees of the Clare Police Department.

The newly renamed bakery opened Wednesday, offering doughnuts, cookies, muffins, brownies and bread. It also has mugs and T-shirts bearing the “Cops & Doughnuts, 100 Percent Cop-Owned” logo, and phrases including “You Have the Right to Remain Glazed” and “Handcuffs and Cream Puffs.”  I wonder if they will carry “Pigs in Blankets”?

Officer Al White says the officers were concerned when the Clare City Bakery’s owners decided to throw in the towel. The 113-year-old bakery would have become the sixth empty storefront in Clare’s three-block downtown.

The officers were on hand for the grand reopening but have hired a manager and will employ local students as staff.

I see a future porn movie in here somewhere!

  1. Very good idea, and it’s starting to look like public citizens and different groups may be the only way out of the recession/depression we’re in, thanks to the watered-down stimulus package (by the Republicans with the help of the “please love me” Democrats) which won’t even get out of the door for the most part until mid to late next year. Even then, most economists agree it’s not likely to help all that much, and that any recovery we see would have likely happened anyway.

Am I the only one who’s becoming disgusted with Obama?? I think sometimes we’d have been better off with Hilary as president and Obama as Secretary of State. That way, he could travel overseas and smooth everything out with this “let’s compromise” attitude he’s so good at and leave Hillary here to ram through policies like we should be doing with the democratic majority we have. The transparancy he promised?? I can’t see a damn thing except his covering the previous administration’s asses and keeping everything as secret as it always has been. And don’t ask don’t tell?? Looks like he’d rather go with “don’t bother” or “don’t rush me” while we lose fighter pilots and Arabic linguists in the midst of two wars. Health care reform with a public option he promised?? Now he only “prefers” a public option. Change we can believe in?? Yep, he changed alright…

Sorry for the rant, but thanks for listening!

    • Tricky, while I was in San Fran a few people had out a table and signs protesting Obama and refering to him as a Nazi President. We didn’t want to get involved with them, but as we were walking by they shouted out at us to come sign a petition to oust Obama. They were up in arms about his health care reform package as well as not getting anything done. Both my brother, sister and I voted for Obama, but I am beginning to agree with you. I keep telling myself to “give him some time”, but I don’t know how much longer we can wait.

We did stop and sign 2 petitions for same sex marriage.:)

    • Hello??? I do believe that YOU helped to vote him into office. We, the right thinking Republican conservatives, tried to tell you, trickybusiness. We told you then if you made your bed we would have to sleep in it. Of course the alternative wasnt much better. But atleast then we wouldn’t have people on TV, saying ” Oh, I’m so happy, now I won’t have to pay for gas or for my house….

      • “The alternative isn’t much better” is quite an understatement. I voted for Obama because I liked what he said he’d do — now I just wish he’d do it. If the McCain/Palin ticket had won, do you think Sarah would be quitting? BTW, what does gas for homes have to do with anything?? That was not a campaign promise. You wouldn’t know that, though, since you didn’t listen to either candidate. You should just stay in the kitchen where you belong and let Maxine handle the politics.

Until this economy picks back up we basically stay home, work and pay bills, especially the $5600 air conditioner we just had to replace!

  4. AMERICA’S NATIONAL HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY!

It’s official. America and the World are now in a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. A World EPIDEMIC with potential catastrophic consequences for ALL of the American people. The first PANDEMIC in 41 years. And WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES will have to face this PANDEMIC with the 37th worst quality of healthcare in the developed World.

STAND READY AMERICA TO SEIZE CONTROL OF YOUR NATIONAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.

We spend over twice as much of our GDP on healthcare as any other country in the World. And Individual American spend about ten times as much out of pocket on healthcare as any other people in the World. All because of GREED! And the PRIVATE FOR PROFIT healthcare system in America.

And while all this is going on, some members of congress seem mostly concern about how to protect the corporate PROFITS! of our GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT NATIONAL DISGRACE. A PRIVATE FOR PROFIT DISGRACE that is in fact, totally valueless to the public health. And a detriment to national security, public safety, and the public health.

Progressive democrats the Tri-Caucus and others should stand firm in their demand for a robust public option for all Americans, with all of the minimum requirements progressive democrats demanded. If congress can not pass a robust public option with at least 51 votes and all robust minimum requirements, congress should immediately move to scrap healthcare reform and request that President Obama declare a state of NATIONAL HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY! Seizing and replacing all PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance plans with the immediate implementation of National Healthcare for all Americans under the provisions of HR676 (A Single-payer National Healthcare Plan For All).

Coverage can begin immediately through our current medicare system. With immediate expansion through recruitment of displaced workers from the canceled private sector insurance industry. Funding can also begin immediately by substitution of payroll deductions for private insurance plans with payroll deductions for the national healthcare plan. This is what the vast majority of the American people want. And this is what all objective experts unanimously agree would be the best, and most cost effective for the American people and our economy.

In Mexico on average people who received medical care for A-H1N1 (Swine Flu) with in 3 days survived. People who did not receive medical care until 7 days or more died. This has been the same results in the US. But 50 million Americans don’t even have any healthcare coverage. And at least 200 million of you with insurance could not get in to see your private insurance plans doctors in 2 or 3 days, even if your life depended on it. WHICH IT DOES!

If President Obama has to declare a NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY to rescue the American people from our healthcare crisis, he will need all the sustained support you can give him. STICK WITH HIM! He’s doing a brilliant job.

    THIS IS THE BIG ONE!

THE BATTLE OF GOOD Vs EVIL!

    Join the fight.

Contact congress and your representatives NOW! AND SPREAD THE WORD!

    God Bless You

    Jacksmith – WORKING CLASS

  5. That’s a nice idea, Jacksmith, but we can’t even get Obama to insist on a public option, much less a single payer. We can’t get our democratic senators and congressmen to agree on it either. Private insurance companies contribute millions and millions to our elected officials to be sure they won’t have to compete with a public option, 50 million on lobbyists in the first quarter of this year alone. Our votes are to make us feel better while the actual truth is that our government officials are bought and paid for.

It’s becoming clear to me that this country is not really about left and right (although that’s what we spend the most time and effort fighting about), but rather about class distinction. The ones with the money are going to make sure it stays that way, the middle class is too busy working to pay much attention to national issues, and the poor have nothing and likely never will. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and I’m starting to think that’s a universal law that we’re powerless to change.

In my next life, I’m planning to come back in Sweden…
    (lol)
