Jon & Kate Plus 8-Crooked Houses and the End of a Marriage

jon-and-kate-gosselin-divorce1I just got done watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 and I don’t really know how I feel about it.  While the news was no big shock, I guess it’s always sad to see the inside parts of a marriage gone bad.  It does appear to me that Kate really doesn’t understand what went wrong.  For those of you who won’t watch the show, but still love the gossip, I will try to recap the show without being a total snark.

First of all, the crooked houses are so darn cute. I’m sure the kids will have many many years of enjoyment in them.  Cara and Maddie each got their own house, with the younger boys sharing a house and the younger girls sharing another.  Each child got to design their own house which really shows the differences in their personalities.  The tup boys chose a pirate themed house, while the tup girls chose a bright pink garden theme.  Maddie designed a house as a veterinarian’s office, while Cara picked a “spooky” house.  Kate did say she really didn’t like the idea of a scary house, but she let Cara be herself and allowed the design to stay.  There was a lot of conflict in the beginning of the show as to where the houses should be placed.  It was decided last fall that the houses would be placed away from the main living quarters, in the woods, so that the children would be safe and shielded from the paparazzi.  Jon cleared the land of underbrush last fall, so the last minute clearing of the land was no big deal.

Kate stated that she never liked  the location that Jon picked out, but chose to remain quiet since she didn’t want another fight between them.  She claims that Jon and her fight just about everything and “it’s really wearing on her and not good for the kids.”  I’m not sure if she was showing her true feelings or playing the martyr role.  She tried to talk to Jon about the location, but claims that Jon won’t talk to her about anything.  He refuses to communicate with her in any way, shape or form. So what she did instead, was to get the guys who were setting up the houses involved.  She explained her thinking that the houses were too far away from the house, and that she couldn’t keep an eye on the kids, especially with only one adult present.    She also felt that the kids wouldn’t play in the houses since they were so far away.  After she got the Crooked House workers  involved and they spoke with Jon about the location, Jon begrudgingly gave in.  Jon did admit that maybe Kate was right…but I still think he just gave up going against Kate once again.

The kids were pretty darn funny.  I must say you can tell that they are not put in front of a TV or a video game all day long.  Their imaginations are quite vivid.  One of the boys said he was going to invite his girlfriends over to his house.  (I hope he didn’t overhear that!), while another claimed to have seen a bear out the back periscope of the pirate house.  In one scene, four of the tups were sitting out front of a house and told their Dad to “be quiet please.” They were having an interview!  How cute….

The marriage is over…..To put it bluntly, I think Jon has just had it.  He did admit that he was too laid back and that he allowed Kate to “always get her way”.  I really think that after years of  Kate emasculating him, he finally found his balls. It’s been no secret who wore the pants in the family and after the last few episodes I can see how Kate will stop at nothing to get her way.  If Jon won’t listen to her, she will manipulate in any way possible to get her what she wants.  Of course, it’s all for the sake of the children.

I’m going to say it again.  I don’t think Kate has any idea what went wrong!  She pretty much blamed Jon for ending their marriage.  She doesn’t want to “be alone” or “do this alone.”  While Jon made it pretty clear that he does not love Kate anymore.  He loves her as the “mother of his children” and hopes to one day have a friendship with her.  It is evident to me that Jon is a very angry, hurt man.

They are both claiming that the show will go on.  The kids and Kate will stay in the house, afterall it is “the children’s house” and Jon will be staying there during his times of visitation.  They both will try to be civil to each other for the sake of the children.  Kate will always be there on every holiday, so it sounds like they had better come to an agreement before they make the holidays a chore for the kids.

I just wanted to get a quick recap out for those of you interested.  These were my first main thoughts about tonight’s show.  It’s time for some dinner and down time before bed so check back tomorrow for some further info.

  1. Oh, PLEASE… Jon, ” I put my children first ” Gosselin was so worried about the “KIDS” why would he have even tried to stick them off in the woods? With the paparazzi and all of the stalkers out there, I would be afraid of someone trying to kidnapping them….

  2. Thanks for the recap of the episode. I’m working from Italy, and I could only see little clips of the announcement about the separation and now divorce on my laptop. As the Guide to Newlyweds for About.com, I’ve been keeping a close eye on this show. I think my interest — and that of my readers — stems from the fact that we all feel as though our marriages can easily break and we can relate to Jon & Kate on some level. I feel for both of them and their children. This is a difficult decision and one that no one comes to lightly. But I also think that we can all learn from their experience and take charge of our own relationships and marriages. It takes a lot of work, compromise, and sacrifice to make a marriage work. And we won’t all make it, but we can definitely try. I wrote more about this in my latest blog: http://newlyweds.about.com/b/2009/06/23/jon-kate-divorcing-are-you-next.htm

    • Thanks for the comment and the link on your blog. I’m glad we could help you out in getting a recap of last nights show. I agree with you completely about relating to the show for various reasons. I think for some people it’s the idea of an ordinary everyday couple that deals with 8 children in a public forum. For others it is a look into the dynamics of a relationship of two very different opposing spouses, that for many years were able to make things work between them.

Even though I must say I often felt humilated for Jon in the way he was treated by Kate, I figured to each their own. As long as it worked for them and the children, who am I to say different. I do believe that Kate summed things up quite well last night when she made the comment about Jon not talking to her about anything. Communication must be at the center of any and all relationships for them to endure. My first marriage failed and now looking back I feel that poor communication was the cause. Even now I find that I will sometimes bury my feelings and thoughts instead of discussing them with my spouse. I don’t have any real reason as to why, but I think that over the years we get so tangled up in everyday life that we forget what it’s all about in the first place. Love, Laughter and Friendship go a long way.

  5. I admit that I don’t watch the show every week, but I did watch it last night. I have always said in the past that Kate was to pushy and bossy. She had to be in control of all things, Jon included, and he could not be Jon. He was always the kids daddy and Kates husband. I really felt sorry for both of them last night. I agree with Margie. I don’t think that Kate really knows what went wrong, but that her attitude and the way that she treated Jon had alot to do with how he feels about her and their relationship. I do hope that they can become friends and continue to be positive role models for all the kids. It will be tough on the kids starting out, but, as long as the adults remain just that, adults, the kids will bounce back. I wish both Kate and Jon luck and many blessing from our Lord.

    • Hey Debbie…I’m the one who thinks Kate has no clue as to what happened in her marriage. Margie thinks Jon is just an outright dog who screwed up a good thing. Sounds like good ole Margie would love to be in Jon’s shoes with no responsbility and lots of disaposible cash. On second thought so would I. Thanks for the comment

  6. Maybe Kate is shocked, acting like a brat and Jon taking it all of these years.

What is wrong with this picture, having twins, wanting more children, having 6 children and having the world watching you, now you decide it’s not working! It’s not about you, it’s about those 8 children!!!! The entire family is in turmoil, who asked for this, I’m very saddened by all of this, by the adults. Suck it up, have they ever, ever, ever been to counseling???? They should go before they call it quits. Who said marriage was easy, especially when you have 8 children, UGH! Whoever had the affair, (if anyone) it’s hard, but think of your children.

Is it Kate??? Is she a total control freak who thought Jon would always take her belittling? Maybe her and Maddie should get separate counseling, that would be an idea.

The entire story is very sad for the children and let’s not forget about the 2 dogs, yes we have 8 children we cannot control but we will get 2 pups and have one big happy household.

Do you think they are watching too much of reality TV?
